Non-uniqueness of Solutions to the Conformal Formulation

چکیده

It is well known that solutions to the conformal formulation of the Einstein constraint equations are unique in the event that the mean curvature is constant (CMC) or near constant (near-CMC). However, the new far-from-constant mean curvature (farfrom-CMC) solution constructions due to Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel and to Maxwell in 2009, and to Gicquad and collaborators in 2010, are based on degree theory rather than the contraction arguments used originally by Isenberg and Moncrief in 1996 for the near-CMC case, and hence little is known about the uniqueness of far-from-CMC constructions. In fact, Maxwell recently demonstrated that solutions are non-unique in the far-from-CMC case for certain families of low regularity mean curvatures. In this article, we investigate uniqueness properties of solutions to the Einstein constraint equations on a closed manifold using standard tools in bifurcation theory. For positive, constant scalar curvature and constant mean curvature, we first demonstrate existence of a critical energy density for the Hamiltonian constraint with unscaled matter sources. We then show that for this choice of energy density, the linearization of the elliptic system develops a one-dimensional kernel in both the CMC and non-CMC (near and far) cases. Using a Liapunov-Schmidt reduction and some standard techniques from nonlinear analysis, we demonstrate that solutions to the conformal formulation with unscaled data are non-unique by determining an explicit solution curve and analyzing its behavior in the neighborhood of a particular solution.

Non-uniqueness in conformal formulations of the Einstein Constraints

Standard methods in non-linear analysis are used to show that there exists a parabolic branching of solutions of the LichnerowiczYork equation with an unscaled source. We also apply these methods to the extended conformal thin sandwich formulation and show that if the linearised system develops a kernel solution for sufficiently large initial data then we obtain parabolic solution curves for th...

We review the conformal symmetry group and investigate the isomorphism between the conformal group and O( D,2 ) . We study the classically  conformal invariant  scalar theory in D -dimensions with a non-positive potential . We solve the  equations  of motion  by  assigning O(D-1, 2)symmetry to the classical solutions with broken translational symmetry in all directions. Then we consider a six d...

Traveling Waves of Some Symmetric Planar Flows of Non-Newtonian Fluids

We present some variants of Burgers-type equations for incompressible and isothermal planar flow of viscous non-Newtonian fluids based on the Cross, the Carreau and the power-law rheology models, and on a symmetry assumption on the flow. We numerically solve the associated traveling wave equations by using industrial data and in order to validate the models we prove existence and uniqueness of ...

The Einstein constraints: uniqueness and non-uniqueness in the conformal thin sandwich approach

We study the appearance of multiple solutions to certain decompositions of Einstein’s constraint equations. Pfeiffer and York recently reported the existence of two branches of solutions for identical background data in the extended conformal thin-sandwich decomposition. We show that the Hamiltonian constraint alone, when expressed in a certain way, admits two branches of solutions with propert...

Non CMC Conformal Data Sets Which Do Not Produce Solutions of the Einstein Constraint Equations

The conformal formulation provides a method for constructing and parametrizing solutions of the Einstein constraint equations by mapping freely chosen sets of conformal data to solutions, provided a certain set of coupled, elliptic determined PDEs (whose expression depends on the chosen conformal data) admit a unique solution. For constant mean curvature (CMC) data, it is known in almost all ca...
